Synopsis:
The game begins with Private Miller on Makin Island, a Marine captured by the Japanese. Just before he is tortured by the Japanese, a Marine raiding party rescues Miller. Miller and the rest of the Marines begin to move toward their extraction point, destroying Japanese ammunition and supply dumps along the way. The party is extracted by boat.
The next stage of the game is set two years after Makin Island, with a major assault on Peleliu Island. Here, the player acquires the ability to call in rocket strikes on enemy positions. After breaking through the Japanese lines, the player destroys two Type 95 Japanese tanks with the rocket strikes, allowing the Allied tanks to advance. Soon after, the sergeant of Miller’s squad is killed. The surviving Marines assault an airfield to destroy antiaircraft guns that are preventing an effective bombing raid on the island. The player gets to use a flamethrower and a bazooka while en route. Once on the structure with the antiaircraft guns, the player can either take control of one of the guns (Triple 25, by the way) and destroy the other emplacements, or can shoot the gunnery crews out of the emplacements. After accomplishing this, there is another Japanese attack until the end of the mission.
Then, the player takes control of Private Petrenko during the Battle of Stalingrad on the Eastern Front. Petrenko wakes up after the massacre of Soviet troops in a fountain, finding only one survivor. This survivor, Sgt. Reznov, instructs the player on sniping the Nazi soldiers surrounding the fountain. After climbing through the ruins of Stalingrad, evading tanks and enemy troops, the player has to assassinate General Amsel, who is the “architect of Stalingrad’s misery”. The mission ends after this.
Three years later, the player participates in the Battle of Seelow Heights in Germany. The player acquires a Panzerschrek and destroys numerous German tanks. After raiding a German camp, the mission ends.
The game returns to the Pacific Theater. The player is in control of Pvt. Miller again and has to destroy three mortar pits and The Point, which is a Japanese stronghold housing a 200mm gun.
The game returns to the Eastern front, this time with Pvt. Petrenko and Sgt. Reznov in control of a Russian T-34 tank. After destroying several German 88 flak cannons, bases, and communication structures, the player begins the final assault on a train station, essential for the transportation of Soviet troops to Berlin.
The Soviets board a train to the Battle of Berlin, where the player and Sgt. Reznov push through Berlin and enter the German metro. The Soviets keep pushing through until the Germans flood their own subway system in an effort to stall the Soviet advance, apparently drowning Sgt. Reznov, the player, and the rest of the Soviet party.
The game turns to Petty Officer Locke who is on a PBY Catalina flying boat. Locke can use several turrets mounted on the plane, such as dual 25mm cannons. The player, accompanied by a second plane, attacks and sinks three Japanese merchant vessels that were carrying ammunition to Okinawa. After destroying this, the flying boat turns to a US fleet that is being assaulted by kamikazes and PT boats. When the flying boat is almost destroyed, more US aircraft arrive and the mission ends.
The game turns to the Battle of Okinawa, with the player mounting a ground assault on Okinawa, pushing through to Shuri Castle. After leveling the Japanese base, the mission ends.
This is the final stage of the campaign. Sgt. Reznov rescues Pvt. Petrenko from the German metro, leading him back to the main Soviet force. The Soviets then mount a final offensive on the Reichstag, the German parliament building and the last German stronghold. The player encounters extreme resistance from the SS Honor Guard, but manages to get to the roof. Just as the player is about to plant the flag, a German soldier jumps up and severely wounds the player with a Walther P38. Reznov then butchers the soldier with his signature meat cleaver, then helps the player plant the flag, signaling the fall of Berlin.
Mini-game:
There is a small minigame included with Call of Duty: World at War called Nazi Zombies. There is an entire story behind this that the player can piece together from radio transmissions while playing Nazi Zombies.
The player first starts with a .45 Colt M1911 pistol and one room. The player can kill/damage zombies and repair barriers for money, which can then be used to unlock extra rooms or buy weapons. When a room is unlocked, the player opens more windows and venues of attack for the zombies, but also more powerful and effective weapons. The zombies can be killed with headshots or body damage. Limbs are prone to being torn off by gunfire, and losing a duplicate of a limb (both arms) will kill the zombie. Zombies have three speeds:
1) The slow shamble. Think old zombie movie. Arms outstretched, slow stumbling walk, moaning. Easiest to shoot down.

2) Lurching walk. The slow shamble on steroids. Zombies move about twice as fast and swing their limbs and head around, making limb/head shots difficult.
3) The frightening sprint. The zombie’s legs are sprinting, with the upper body, arms, and head flopping back. This makes headshots extremely difficult, and the easiest option is to sink ammunition into their torso.
Nacht der Untoten:
This is the first map of Nazi Zombies, and it the least dynamic. Enemies get steadily more difficult to kill and increase in numbers, forcing the player to unlock extra rooms for better weapons. There are three rooms the player can unlock, each with several entry points. There is also a mystery box on the 2nd floor that give the player a random weapon. In the starting room, the player can buy a Kahr 98 “Kurtz” and an M1 Carbine. Both are useless after Wave 5. Other rooms contain: Thompson. Effective up to Wave 7. Flamethrower (mystery box). Effective up to level 10. BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle). Effective up to level 14. Double barrel shotgun. Effective up to level 10. Trench gun. Effective up to level 14.
Verrückt.
The second map of Nazi Zombies, your opponents seem to be more advanced than those on Nacht der Untoten. They will swipe at you through bars, swear when shot, scream, and vault over walls. Frightening. There are more than 5 rooms that you can unlock, one of them being the Electricity room. There are powerup machines scattered throughout the building and electricity barriers that all require power. By making your way through the building and opening about 20 entry points, the player can use electric fields to stop zombies from entering or drink soda that grants special abilities. The starting room has a BAR and a Gewehr 43, both useless after Level 7. Other loot includes: Sawed off double barrel shotgun. Effective up to level 14. Stg. 44: Effective up to level 11. M1 Garand. Not very effective. MP40. Level 14. PPsh-41. Level 14. .357 Magnum. Effective up to level 20.
